Artist Resale Right (ARR)

The Artist Resale Right (ARR) gives artists and their heirs a small royalty when one of their original works is resold through an art market professional, such as a gallery or auction house. In the UK, ARR applies to qualifying resales above a set threshold and lasts for the artist's life plus 70 years. The royalty is calculated on a sliding scale of the resale price. ARR is collected on artists' behalf by designated collecting societies, so the most important step is to register with one. Keep clear records of every original work you sell, including buyer details where possible, so resales can be tracked. Combined with strong provenance and chain of ownership, ARR can become a meaningful long-term income stream.
