Chain of Ownership
Chain of ownership is the documented sequence of everyone who has owned a particular artwork, from the artist's studio to its current home. It is a core component of provenance. For contemporary artists, starting the chain cleanly is your job: issue a certificate of authenticity and sales invoice at first sale, and keep your own record of the buyer. If the work is later resold, gifted or loaned, encourage owners to share updates so the chain stays unbroken. A complete chain of ownership protects future value, helps verify authenticity and is increasingly important for resale rights and due diligence. Store the chain in your digital archive alongside the artwork's documentation so anyone tracing the work can see a credible, continuous history.
