Ownership History

Ownership history is the chronological list of every person, gallery, institution or estate that has owned an artwork, beginning with the artist and continuing through every subsequent transfer. For contemporary artists, collectors and galleries it is the human spine of provenance: a clear, named sequence that shows how a work has moved through the market and into private or public hands. A complete ownership history names each owner, the dates they acquired and parted with the work, and the type of transfer involved, whether sale, gift, inheritance or consignment to auction. It is built from primary documents: the original sales invoice from the artist or first gallery, subsequent invoices, written transfer notes, gift letters, probate records for estates, and any Certificate of Authenticity reissued or annotated along the way. Properly maintained, it forms an unbroken chain of ownership that supports authenticity and protects long-term value. Ownership history matters because gaps create doubt.
