Retail Price

The retail price is the public-facing price of an artwork: what a collector pays. It must include the gallery commission, any production and framing costs, and a margin that allows your practice to sustain itself. Setting retail prices is a strategic decision, not a guess. Use a consistent logic such as a per-square-centimetre rate, adjusted for medium, edition and demand, and keep prices stable across galleries and your own studio sales. Inconsistent or hidden discounting undermines collector trust and future resale value. Record the retail price for every work in your inventory and on the sales invoice, and pair it with a clear internal trade price so all parties know how the numbers split when a sale happens.
