Artist statement

Through the Quiet Divides series, I explore the boundaries that shape our experience of landscape — walls, paths, waterways and horizons. Inspired by places across Yorkshire and beyond, I use acrylic, ink and layered surfaces to simplify and abstract real locations, revealing their underlying structure, atmosphere and sense of place.

Biography

Andrew Bowers is a contemporary British landscape artist based in Yorkshire. Inspired by walking, observation and a strong sense of place, his work explores the quiet structural elements within the landscape—boundaries, paths, walls, waterways and horizons that shape how a place is experienced. Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, he creates layered paintings that balance representation and abstraction, distilling real locations into compositions of atmosphere, memory and structure. His ongoing Quiet Divides series investigates the spaces between landscape and human presence, revealing the subtle divisions that organise and define our experience of the natural world. Through texture, colour and simplified forms, Bowers invites viewers to slow down, look more carefully, and discover a deeper sense of connection with place.
