Held Horizon is structured around a suspended horizontal divide, with luminous blues set against darker passages of black, charcoal and deep red. Layered textures and gestural marks suggest movement across the surface. Beneath this activity, the painting remains anchored by a quiet, stable horizon that introduces a sense of stillness.
The painting stems from a visit to the Cave of Hercules near Tangier with my mother more than three decades ago. Looking across the Strait of Gibraltar towards Africa left a lasting impression. Rather than recording the location itself, Held Horizon explores the memory of standing between continents, where geography, myth and personal experience converge.
Built through successive layers of acrylic paint, transparent veils, texture and gestural mark-making.
