About this work
Through the Gate is a contemporary landscape painting inspired by walks through the Yorkshire Dales. Part of the Quiet Divides series, the work explores the emotional experience of transition—those moments when a landscape invites us to move beyond where we stand and into something new. A simple wooden gate occupies the foreground, creating both a physical and symbolic threshold. Beyond it, the landscape unfolds towards distant hills and open space, encouraging a sense of movement, curiosity and possibility.
